If you’re losing …
If you’re losing inches, and not weight, that means that you are losing fat and gaining muscle. I call that the ” Great Exchange! ” Good job Calgaryman. Your calories are fine. You have more then enough calories coming in to build and maintain muscle AND yet enough of a deficit to lose fat. The scale and the tape measure together tell the story. Keep going. The key word is Patience. This time next month at the rate you’re going, you’ll be stunned how lean you get.
My BMR is around …
My BMR is around 2000 calories/day. Is it possible to GAIN muscle mass while in a slight calorie deficit to lose a few pounds of fat? Will any extra calories needed for muscle growth be taken from fat storage if enough calories are not taken in? I do make sure to eat alot of good protein, but I am only taking in about 2400 calories/day when dieting and I am quite active. Just want to know if I can build muscle at the same time. Also I am losing inches but not weight so much so far.
Good idea!

It’s not what you take icecold, it’s what activity you do, AND consuming less calories then you’re taking in. If you’re playing rugby, then you’re burning quite a few calories. I’m wondering what your diet is like??

whey protein shakes …
whey protein shakes… i recommend “ON gold standard”. you can buy it at GNC for cheap or at least here in Miami they are usually on special for like 16 bucks. you can eat it with a small portion of some other form of protein preferably white meat like chicken or fish and or with some veggies or rice cakes but try to stay away from carbs and sugar at this point. p.s.. and if you really want to see some huge improvements in the way of muscle development, drink a casein protein shake b4 sleep
If you’re a natural …
If you’re a natural athlete, I would limit my protein powders to 1 scoop per day. With a balanced diet, you’ll get plenty of protein for muscle repair. Natural protein from food is more filling then powder, and it stays in your system longer which allows it to mix with other food proteins. You can’t EAT muscle gains on. You must train them on. A high carb post workout meal, with even a bit of sugar involved, is best. I try to eat my post workout meal within 30 minutes of finishing the workout.
Depends on what do …
Depends on what do u want to develop. If u want to grow on muscle mass i would recommend lower sets with max weight or if u want to get fit just use regular weight and many reps/sets
Have a balanced …
Have a balanced diet high on carbohydrates(pasta, potatoes, rice, bread, beans) and proteins( beef, fish, chicken) and work out at least 1h per day in a proper gym and for the 1st month use free weights like bench press, dumbells, etc oh and btw u should have like 3-4 exercises per muscle with 4 series and 12 repetition for each with 1 min pause. Good luck
U obvious don’t …
U obvious don’t know what are u talking about why the do we still have bodybuilders if they die in 1-2 after they use proteins? I agree on one thing natural proteins are better than powder and pills but you can’t eat 1 kilo of beef per day do you? thats why they use powder!

You’re asking Steve …
You’re asking Steve, but if you wouldn’t mind an opinion. No, your strength training is really the answer. Don’t force protein. You wan to have a healthy diet and build on your strength gains. Look to increase intensity by progressively using heavier weights or more sets. Don’t force gains along, coax them instead. Added weight will increase the effort and your muscles will respond by getting bigger and stronger. Natural protein in food works better then powders. I eat 3 meals a day + 2 snacks.
hey steve,
I’m a …
hey steve,
I’m a skinny guy who hits the gym with intensity 3 times a week. Do I absolutely need to eat 5-6 small meals a day with high amounts of protien to really change my body?
And natural …
And natural proteins last longer in the gut making them available for muscle repair much longer time.
I know another very …
I know another very good fitness writer, champion natural bodybuilder, Olympic lifter and rowing athlete who ALWAYS said, just take a teaspoon of protein powder in the morning and then just get some natural protein at each meal through a healthy diet and you’ll get plenty of protein.I didn’t pile up on protein, but occasionally I’d force the issue a bit. That was a mistake. If you’re protein short on some days, you’ll catch up on the weekends when you generally eat more food. Don’t force protein.
6 weeks ago after …
6 weeks ago after playing Steve’s videos, I decided to drop all protein bars, and reduce daily protein powder from 4 scoops a day,.down to 1. I may have just slightly increased fish or chicken protein calories in replacement,..but not much. I’ve leaned out. Don’t know why my power is skyrocketing right now,.but it is. 300 lbs X 22 reps on squat, and 260 X12 on bench. Probably actually down to 150 grams per day or at least I think because You get more protein through normal food then you realize.
I’m about 184 lbs …
I’m about 184 lbs at 5,11″. From time to time I used to push my protein over 200 or 220 grams per day and sometimes pushed it over 250g per day. I gained NO additional muscle or strength by doing that. It was just extra calories. I’m usually taking in about .9 grams per pound of bodyweight. In your case, that would be 180 grams. I take in about 160 g per day and have even dropped that some. I do both heavy HIT lifting and HIIT cardio, so my protein needs might be relatively higher then some.
protein shakes are …
protein shakes are used for meal replacement….when you dont have time to sit down and eat….all these people that think they need to drink 500 ing protein shakes a day are WRONG….GOOD VIDEO!
